Night works got underway this week on the $5.6 million project to rehabilitate Dobney Avenue and Pearson Street, two of the busiest roads in the city's sub-arterial network.
Wagga Wagga City Council has contracted Fulton Hogan to carry out night works on Dobney Avenue (between Edward Street and the roundabout into Bunnings) and Pearson Street (between the roundabout at Edward Street/Pearson Street and Cheshire Street) that includes the two roundabouts outside Bunnings.
Dobney Avenue & Pearson Street Upgrade
Council's Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner welcomed the start of works at the Sturt Highway end of Dobney Avenue on Wednesday night (20 April).
"This is an overdue upgrade and I'm sure that the community will be happy with it when it's all done," Mr Faulkner said.
"It will deliver a smoother and safer ride for road users and improve environmental factors such as noise reduction and the flow of surface water.
"It will also have a thicker and stronger base course, which is important as both streets see a lot of commercial vehicle movements and are also routes approved for Higher Mass Limits (HML)."
The project will involve milling out the existing road pavement and putting in a thick continuous layer of asphaltic concrete pavement along Dobney Avenue, then Pearson Street and finishing with the two roundabouts.
The works are being carried out between 6pm and 6am to minimise disruptions for motorists and businesses.
Traffic will be detoured via Pearson Street during the night works on Dobney Avenue and then switch around when the crews start working on Pearson Street.
The roads will be reopened to traffic during the daytime.
The $5.6 million project is being 75 per cent funded by the NSW Government through its Fixing Local Roads program, with Wagga Wagga City Council providing the balance.
Mr Faulkner said it has been a busy financial year for Council on the road works front.
"We've had a good rebuild of our roads over the past nine months, with the completion Lake Albert Road, Kooringal Road, two sections of Red Hill Road, Stanley Street, Darlow Street, and Northcott Parade," Mr Faulkner said.
"Work is also underway on the Dunns Road project, with upgrading of the three kilometres of unsealed pavement to a sealed surface set to begin after Anzac Day.
"We will continue to focus on improving our road network in the next financial year, with works on Inglewood Road, Copland Street, Old Narrandera Road, Gregadoo Road, Lord Baden Powell Drive, Lloyd Road, Nagle Street and Macleay Street among those slated for upgrades in the 2022/2023 financial year."
