As the weather warms up and more people head out to enjoy Moira Shire's recreation reserves and public spaces, it is more important than ever to do the right thing by cleaning up after your dog.
Moira Shire Council's Chair Administrator, Dr Graeme Emonson PSM, is urging all dog owners to help keep our local reserves safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone by ensuring they pick up after their pets.
"We have several recreation reserves and sports grounds within Moira Shire designated as dog off- leash zones. While it is wonderful to see the community using these spaces to exercise their dogs, it is disappointing to hear several reports of dog waste being left on the playing surfaces at our sports grounds," Dr Emonson said.
"Not only does dog waste carry parasites and diseases that can harm other dogs, but it also poses health risks to humans. Our community deserves clean, safe public spaces to enjoy."
"We know that most pet owners are diligent, however there are still instances where dog waste is left behind for others to deal with."
Dogs can be exercised off-leash at Moira Shire's recreation reserves during daylight hours, provided they remain under their owner's supervision and control. However, off-leash provisions do not apply during organised sporting events or similar activities.
Under local laws, dog owners are required to clean up after their pets when in public places. Owners must carry appropriate equipment, such as a bag, to collect and dispose of their dog's waste. Failure to comply may result in a $396 fine.
"Our recreation reserves and public spaces are for everyone to enjoy. By picking up after your dog, you are contributing to a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable environment for all," concluded Dr Emonson.
