The Mining and Energy Union welcomes today's appointment of Dr Iain Ross AO as Chair of the Net Zero Economy Authority.
MEU General President Tony Maher said Dr Ross, a former President of the Fair Work Commission, has a wealth of industrial relations experience and is well placed to ensure workers' interests are protected during Australia's energy transition.
"A key element of the Authority's work will be implementing the Energy Industry Jobs Plan to support workers affected by power station closures," said Mr Maher.
"For the sake of our energy workforce and energy regions, it's very important that this work succeeds.
"I am confident Dr Ross has the expertise and track record to lead this work."
Dr Ross has been appointed as acting Chair of the Net Zero Economy Agency, replacing outgoing chair Greg Combet. He will be appointed as Chair of the Net Zero Economy Authority once it is established.
Mr Maher urged the swift passage of legislation to establish the Net Zero Economy Authority, with legislation currently before Parliament.
"The energy transition is well underway and power industry workers need the nationally-coordinated support the Authority will provide," he said.
The MEU thanked Mr Combet for his work as Chair of the Net Zero Economy Agency, which has done important preparatory work developing the scope of the Authority.
"Greg Combet has done an excellent job developing the model for the Authority, which is now at the point of being legislated," said Mr Maher.
"He has brought all stakeholders together and come up with a plan with broad support from business, unions and government, setting the Authority up for success."
