Passing of Dr Munir Abid – A Pioneer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in South Australia
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of South Australia is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr Munir Abid, a revered elder, pioneering member, and former President of the Community. Dr Abid passed away peacefully in Adelaide on 29 April 2025, aged 89.
Dr Munir Abid was one of the earliest and most influential members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in South Australia. Serving as President for close to a decade, he played a vital role in the growth of the Community. Through his wisdom, humility, and tireless service, he laid the foundation for many of the initiatives and values that continue to guide the Community today.
Outside of his religious and community leadership, Dr Abid was internationally respected for his contributions to plant taxonomy. A renowned botanist and senior researcher at the State Herbarium of South Australia, he published extensively and helped shape the scientific understanding of Australia's native flora. His decades-long dedication to taxonomy and systematics is commemorated in numerous scientific publications, including contributions to the Flora of South Australia and Flora of Australia.
His academic accomplishments were matched only by his personal integrity and devotion to service. Dr Abid was widely known for his generosity, scholarly discipline, and spiritual commitment. His life's work remains a testament to the power of faith, knowledge, and community service.
