DRAFT Debt Recovery & Management Policy

Council has endorsed to place the draft Debt Recovery & Management Policy on public exhibition for a period of 28 days for community feedback.

Brief Outline

This policy sets out Council's framework for the timely, efficient and lawful recovery of rates, charges, fees and other debts to ensure sound financial management and effective cash flow. It outlines consistent and transparent processes for billing, reminders, payment arrangements and recovery action in line with legislative requirements, while encouraging early engagement from debtors to prevent debts from escalating. Where necessary, Council may use statutory recovery powers, including referral to debt recovery agencies or legal action, with the sale of land used only as a last resort. The policy also recognises financial hardship, providing access to assistance and concessions in accordance with Council's Hardship Assistance Policy, while ensuring debts are only written off in limited circumstances permitted by legislation.
