Kiama Council

Kiama Council is committed to reducing waste, improving resource recovery, and creating a sustainable future for our community.

To help realise these goals we're developing a Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2024-30, and the draft strategy is now available for your feedback.

The draft strategy has four priorities:

1. Improve infrastructure planning and environmental management

2. Optimise waste management costs and foster adaptive waste management contracts

3. Support and implement innovative internal waste management initiatives

4. Reduce emissions from all waste management operations

To develop the strategy, we looked at our current services, including the number and types of services, tonnages of waste, and content (FOGO, recycling, residual waste).

We also considered population growth forecasts.

The draft reflects community feedback about waste management from consultations for our Community Strategic Plan in 2022.

It also aligns with waste strategies at other councils as well as the NSW and Australian Government.

We are now seeking further community feedback until Friday 1 November 2024.

You can fill out our online survey (paper surveys are available at our Customer Service Centre, Kiama, and Gerringong Libraries).

You can also provide your thoughts to our council staff at our community 'pop ups':

  • Wednesday 23 October from 3pm-6pm at Kiama Farmers Market
  • Wednesday 30 October from 4pm-6pm at Oztag, Kiama Leisure Centre

You can also make a formal submission.

Your feedback will be collated, reviewed and considered in completing the strategy.

The final Strategy will then be provided to our councillors for endorsement.
