Drink driver four times limit

Police have prevented a tragedy waiting to happen after they intercepted an alleged drink driver in Southbank this morning.

Police from the Public Order Response Team were patrolling when they observed a white Mazda SUV driving erratically on Kings Way about 5.20am.

The vehicle, which appeared to have recent damage, was intercepted on Sturt Street and the driver returned a positive result to roadside breath test.

The driver, a 33-year-old South Yarra woman, was taken to the Melbourne West Police Station where an evidentiary breath test was conducted. The result obtained was an astonishing .220.

The woman's licence was immediately suspended for 12 months and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days at cost of $896.10.

It is expected the driver will be charged on summons for driving-related offences.

Police are also investigating whether the woman breached the Chief Health Officer directions.
