A Naracoorte man will face court after he was detected travelling at 196km/h with a blood alcohol of nearly three times over the legal limit early this morning.
Just before 3am on Sunday 7 April, Coonalpyn police were on patrol on the Dukes Highway near Tailem Bend when the detected motorcycle rider travelling north at 196km/h in a 110km/h zone.
The police patrol didn't stop the motorcycle at the time, but located the same motorcyclist at a nearby service station at Tailem Bend where he had stopped to refuel and buy some food.
The 53-year-old man was also breath tested, allegedly registering a blood alcohol reading of 0.149 or nearly three times over the legal limit of 0.05.
The Naracoorte man was reported for riding at speed dangerous to the public and drink driving. He was also issued an instant six month loss of licence, his Yamaha motorcycle was impounded for 28 days and he will be summonsed to appear in the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court at a date to be set.
A police spokesperson said, "Motorcycle riders are vulnerable road users at anytime - but to ride a motorcycle at 196km/h while under the influence of alcohol is recipe for disaster.
This man is could have easily been our 10th motorcyclist to die on our roads this year, had he not been stopped by a police patrol."
