A man has been charged following a fatal crash in the Illawarra last weekend.
About 11.10am on Sunday 10 November 2024, emergency services were called to the northbound lanes of the M1 Motorway at Figtree, following reports of a three-vehicle crash.
Officers from Wollongong Police District attended and were told the rider of a Triumph motorcycle and the driver of a Ford Falcon utility attempted to merge into the same lane and collided.
The impact caused the motorcyclist to lose control and he was ejected from the motorcycle and collided with a white MG SUV.
The driver of the Ford Falcon utility then allegedly failed to stop after the crash.
Despite the efforts of first responders and Ambulance Paramedics, the rider of the motorcycle, a 66-year-old man, was unable to be revived and died at the scene.
Officers from the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Following inquiries, about 4.30pm yesterday (Friday 15 November 2024), police attended Spearing Parade, Gwynneville and located a silver Ford Falcon in the backyard of the premises. The vehicle has been seized and will be subject to forensic and mechanical examination.
About 9.40pm last night, police attended Power Drive at Mount Warrigal, where they arrested a 45-year-old man.
He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with six offences - dangerous driving causing death – drive manner dangerous, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, negligent driving occasioning death, drive unregistered vehicle, drive uninsured vehicle and drive whilst suspended.
He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local court later today (Saturday 16 November 2024).
