Police are urging motorists to slow down and be safe on the roads after a traffic operation at Don yesterday where 25 drivers were detected speeding, and police located and seized several firearm related items.
"Between 2pm and 3.30pm yesterday, police from Western Road Policing Services conducted a traffic operation on the Bass Highway at Don targeting speeding offences," said Senior Sergeant Darren Woolley.
"Disappointingly, during the operation police detected 25 drivers travelling above the posted speed limit; with 19 of them travelling between 15km/h and 29km/h over the limit."
All speeding drivers were issued with infringement notices for the offences.
"Further, during the traffic operation police intercepted a grey Suzuki Swift which was speeding. Police searched the car and allegedly located and seized an Astra .357 Magnum Revolver, a quantity of ammunition, a taser, a small amount of methamphetamine, two knifes and a baton."
A 43-year-old woman from Devonport and a 36-year-old man from Port Sorell were arrested and charged with offences relating to possession of the firearm and dangerous articles.
"It is concerning that some motorists continue to break the road rules and put themselves and others at risk on our roads," said Senior Sergeant Woolley.
"Speeding, especially in wet and slippery conditions, puts the driver and other motorists at the very real risk of crashing and being killed or seriously injured on our roads."
"Police will continue to target dangerous driving behaviours on our rods, and we urge all motorists to take care and drive to the conditions."
