Durham Joins Alliance To Enhance Planetary Health

Durham University

A glass globe of the planet Earth surrounded by green grass

We have joined the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), reaffirming our institution's commitment to understanding and addressing global environmental change and its health impacts.

The alliance connects us to a worldwide network of universities and other organisations that have a shared interest in the impacts of public health and climate change.

A growing consortium

The alliance is a growing consortium of more than 480 universities, non-governmental organisations, research institutes and government entities from over 80 countries around the world.

Their vision centres around a world where all people thrive for generations to come by protecting and regenerating the Earth's natural systems.

PHA supports the dissemination of new research, the development and curation of foundational education materials and bringing together communities of practice around the world.

Joining the alliance

We have joined the alliance on the relevance of our work and in demonstration of the University's commitment to ongoing collaboration in planetary health.

This aligns with our wider health strategy and programme of research, education, engagement and impact.

The wider programme involves initiatives such as our SMART Soils Lab, pioneering research by our Department of Earth Sciences to help communities living near active volcanoes, and our ongoing work around clean air policies in the UK.

The SMART Soils Lab brings together our expertise in engineering, biosciences and sociology to find new ways of improving soil health, supporting sustainable land management and changing how we value this vital resource.

We are pleased to join the Planetary Health Alliance and be part of the worldwide action to protect our planet and advance change on some of the most urgent challenges of our time. In doing so, we hope to contribute towards protecting the health of people across the world and in making a real difference to climate change, sustainability and the health of our planet through our world-leading research and education.
