We've partnered with the Foundation of Light charity to work together on initiatives aimed at improving communities across North East England.
The partnership was officially marked by a ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Beacon of Light in Sunderland, UK.
The MoU underscores a shared commitment to fostering education, health, and well-being in the region.
Youth Health Hub
The initial focus will be on developing a transformative community project, the 'Youth Health Hub' in North Durham's Stanley area.
The Youth Health Hub will address critical issues such as educational attainment, health challenges, and social care for young people.
It will include interventions such as weekly evening sessions, targeted mentoring, creative and physical activities, and school-based sessions.
Improving life chances
Our Vice-Chancellor Professor Karen O'Brien said: "We are committed to working with others locally, regionally and nationally, to improve life chances and promote prosperity in North East England.
"We are very pleased to be working with the Foundation of Light, which has a proven track record of fostering opportunities and skills in communities – initially on a Youth Health Hub which we hope will have a transformative impact for young people in Stanley, and, beyond that, on other similarly impactful projects to follow."
Sir Bob Murray, Chair of Trustees at the Foundation of Light, said: "At the Foundation of Light, we've always believed in the power of collaboration to make a tangible difference.
"Partnering with Durham University amplifies our efforts to invest in communities and transform lives."
Tailored support
In future, the partnership will explore further avenues for collaboration.
This will include initiatives with Durham County Council to support school transitions, financial literacy, and digital skills, as well as tailored mentoring programmes with social housing providers.
This MoU sets the stage for a lasting relationship, with both organisations committed to working together to bring positive and meaningful change to communities across North East England.
