Dwelling and household estimates are used for many purposes including planning, policy formation, business decisions, and as 'bottom lines' in the calculation of market coverage rates.
Key facts
At 30 September 2024, the estimated number of:
- private dwellings is 2,097,100
- households is 2,020,000.
These estimates are based on the 2018 Census of Population and Dwellings.
In the Dwelling and household estimates: December 2024 quarter release on 14 January 2025, we will revise the dwelling and household estimates as follows:
- Dwelling estimates
- Private dwelling estimates will be revised from the September 2018 quarter onwards to incorporate the 2023 Census of Population and Dwellings counts and tenure information.
- Private dwelling estimates from the September 2023 quarter onwards will be rebased to the 2023 Census of Population and Dwellings.
- Household estimates
- Household estimates will remain on 2018-base.
- An interim revision for household tenure estimates will be made to incorporate the 2023 Census of Population and Dwellings tenure information.
Household estimates will be further updated in 2026 following work on the 2023-base family and household projections.
