- Nearly $5.4 million awarded to 15 e-waste storage, collection and processing projects
- More than 8,000 tonnes of e-waste to be diverted from landfill and more than 80 jobs to be created
- Supports commitment by Cook Labor Government to ban e-waste disposal to landfill
The Cook Labor Government has allocated $5.4 million to increase e-waste storage, collection, recycling and processing throughout WA as part of the second round of its E-waste Infrastructure Grants Program.
That program - which supports the Government's commitment to reduce the number of electronics and electrical items going to landfill - has previously provided $4.5 million in grants to WA local governments, small businesses and not-for-profits, bringing the Government's total investment in e-waste recycling to nearly $10 million.
E-waste includes items with a plug, battery or cord, including computers and mobile phones, as well as home appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines and dryers.
Grants are awarded to infrastructure projects that support the increasing recycling capability and capacity throughout the State, including regional WA, where funds will help with the construction of facilities in the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup and the Shire of Northam.

The Shire of Northam will build an "E-Shed" where all e-waste is stored for testing, separation and recycling at the Old Quarry Waste Management Facility in Northam. This shed will be equipped with a 'Test and Tag' machine where all electronic goods will be tested and either placed in the Northam Re-Store for Re-Use or placed in shipping containers for delivery to a recycling facility. The new facility also gives the Shire of Northam the opportunity to collect and safely store additional e-waste items, such as light globes, mobile phones and batteries. |

This project will provide a specific e-waste drop-off point consisting of approximately 400 square metres of hard standing for the collection of whitegoods, electronics, large e-waste items, such as televisions and computers, which will be recycled/ repurposed to be put back into the community via an onsite reuse shop. The facility will also teach residents about the importance of recycling and especially e-waste management, and ways they can contribute to solving the problem and reducing their environmental footprint. |
