Western Downs Regional Council has partnered with Griffith University to develop a masterplan for a revitalisation of Thomas Jack Park in Dalby.
A project to develop a masterplan for Thomas Jack Park was announced as part of Council's COVID-19 Recovery Package to secure and create local jobs, and Council has now engaged Griffith University to take the project forward.
Council Spokesperson for Recreational Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said the partnership signalled the first steps in developing a lasting vision for the site which would be enjoyed by residents and visitors.
"We are committed to ensuring our parks are alive with activities and connect our people, and this project is another exciting chapter for our region," Cr Tillman said.
"As part of the development process, Griffith University will be undertaking community engagement to understand how the park is currently used and by whom, as well as understanding the types of features the community might like to see included in a future revitalisation of the park.,
"The Griffith team will be on the ground around Dalby from 7-9 October, with surveys also available via QR codes and online for the community to complete by 1 November. The team will also be engaging directly with various stakeholders as part of its research."
"As part of the engagement blitz, Colin the Doughnut Man will giving out free doughnuts on site from 3pm-6pm on Friday, 8 October at Thomas Jack Park, and from 9am to 12 noon on Saturday 9 October at the busking area on Cunningham Street."
After 1 November, Griffith University will be back in Dalby to present a variety of concepts and to gain further Council and community feedback before a draft master plan is developed.
Cr Tillman said Council was confident the team from Griffith University would deliver a result the community would be proud of.
"Council is eager to deliver public spaces that meet the needs of the community and create a vibrant space for people to head outside and be a part of our wonderful community," she said.
"There will be multiple opportunities to provide feedback and I encourage residents to get involved and help us shape the future of our region.
"Thomas Jack Park is one of several major projects being fast-tracked by Western Downs Regional Council and follows projects such as the revitalisations of the Miles CBD Streetscape, Tara Lagoon Parklands, Waterloo Plain Park at Wandoan, Caliguel Lagoon at Condamine, and Russell Park Mountain Bike Trails at the Bunya Mountains.
"Council is delivering a raft of major projects to boost local jobs and build a strong, sustainable future for the Western Downs.
"I encourage residents to come on down, have a free doughnut, and give the team their feedback on this exciting project."
The completion of a masterplan will ensure the upgrade of Thomas Jack Park is eligible for funding from other levels of Government in the future.
