Climate science experts will explore solutions for a sustainable future at a free family-friendly weekend event in Lake Macquarie.

The Eco Exchange at the Landcare and Sustainable Living Centre, umali barai-ku, on Saturday 22 February will feature a climate action discussion panel of local thought leaders, hands-on workshops and a talk by award-winning climate scientist and writer Dr Joelle Gergis.

An internationally recognised expert in Australian and Southern Hemisphere climate variability and change, Dr Gergis has authored more than 130 scientific publications.

Lake Macquarie City Council Coordinator Sustainability Engagement Chris Harle said the waste-free event would also include live music, a tour of the nearby 'tiny forest' that has thrived since it was planted in 2023 and a bike valet with free bike maintenance.

"Eco Exchange provides people of all ages and all backgrounds with a chance to learn, engage and take action towards a more sustainable future for our community," she said.

"We're extremely fortunate to have someone of Dr Gergis's calibre to share her thoughts and knowledge, and I'm looking forward to hearing how she sees climate change affecting communities like ours here in Lake Macquarie."

The Eco Exchange, which also includes free ice-creams and kids' activities, will run 8.30am-2pm. Go to lakemac.com.au
