Education Minister Faces Student Queries Today

Liberal Party Victoria

VCE students continue to face uncertainty about the grading, appeals process and timelines for exam results and further education offers following Labor's latest VCE exam debacle.

Today, Minister for Education, Ben Carroll, must answer:

  • Does the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority's (VCAA) commitment to having all results published on Thursday 12 December still stand?
  • Will students be informed of what questions in each of the compromised exam papers were impacted?
  • Will students be informed how these questions were marked?
  • Will students be informed how their results have been moderated if anomalies have been identified?
  • How will the VCAA's policy of "positive marking" affect non-compromised exams?
  • How will students be able to make an informed Score Review Request if the marking moderation process is not transparent?
  • Will a streamlined, compromised-exam specific process for submitting a Score Review Request be established given the volume of appeals expected?
  • What additional resources will be allocated to ensure the timely and accurate management of score appeals?
  • Will the Minister guarantee that all Score Review Requests will be completed in time for the 2025 tertiary offers?
  • Will 2025 tertiary education offers be impacted or delayed?

Last week, Labor teamed up with crossbench MPs in the Parliament to block an Ombudsman's investigation into the VCE exam debacle. The Victorian Liberals and Nationals have written to the Victorian Ombudsman to request a comprehensive inquiry into the systemic failures of the VCAA to ensure the integrity of future VCE examinations.

Shadow Minister for Early Childhood and Education, Jess Wilson, said: "Under the Minister's watch, tens of thousands of VCE students have had years of hard work jeopardised.
