Education Union Condemns Treaty Path Repeal

Independent Education Union - Queensland and Northern Territory (IEU-QNT)

The union representing 17,000 teachers and support staff in Queensland and Northern Territory non-government schools has condemned today's move by the new Queensland government to repeal the Path to Treaty process.

Independent Education Union – Queensland and Northern Territory (IEU-QNT) Branch Secretary Terry Burke said repealing the process was a disgraceful move.

"Today is a shameful day in our state's history," Mr Burke said.

"The Crisafulli government has continued to show its absolute disrespect to Queensland's First Nations Peoples and communities in using the first day in Parliament to repeal this important process.

"For the vote to repeal the treaty and truth-telling process to be put within a wider vote (to amend Olympic and Paralympic Games and Workplace Health and Safety legislation) also underscores the Crisafulli government's contempt for the process of reconciliation in this state.

"The Crisafulli government might like to think it can stop the truth from being told but the truth of their disrespect towards Queensland's First Nations Peoples and communities cannot be hidden.

"David Crisafulli has made his choice to be on the wrong side of history by repealing the Path to Treaty process and in seeking to silence the voices of First Nations Peoples," Mr Burke said.
