On 9th August 2023, Ahmed Hany Hamdy representing Wirayudha Pencak Silat in Egypt, an Indonesian Martial Art with representation in Australia, graded his students for the first time under the Wirayudha belt system. Ahmed is the exclusive and official representative of Wirayudha Pencak Silat in Egypt.
Ahmed graded several of his students during a recent event held in Egypt and issued them with their first belt under the Egypt Wirayudha Pencak Silat system, the Yellow Belt.
"It was great to see so many people attend the first Egypt Wirayudha Pencak Silat grading" said Ahmed.
"Grading rewards athletes for their efforts through achieving belts. It helps give an indication of what level students are at and can give them extra motivation to push themselves to the next level. Techniques learnt can also be used for self-defence and helps aspiring athletes improve their technique so they can better prepare for international competition, such as the Pencak Silat World Championship."
"Thank you to all those who attended and supported the event and we look forward to the future of Pencak Silat in Egypt."
The event was attended by several sports clubs, with participants from a diverse range of religions, cultures, abilities and disabilities. It was sponsored by the Egyptian commissioner for Pencak Silat, the Arab African Company for Sports Marketing and Services and was supported by the Egyptian Pencak Silat Federation.
"Thank you very much to the parents who honoured us with their children's participation" noted the the Egyptian Pencak Silat Federation.
"Thanks to all the athletes for their commitment and for appearing in front of the committee with an honourable and more than wonderful performance. We thank all responsible for this great work."
"We are excited to see the great work Ahmed is doing in Egypt, with a focus on inclusion" said Lee Edmondson, Wirayudha Pencak Silat (Australia).
"A big congratulations to those who attended the event and achieved their first Wirayudha Pencak Silat belt."
"It is also great to see other representative bodies supporting the growth of Pencak Silat as a sport in Egypt. An event such as this has many benefits not only to individuals, but can also help build communities."
"Training Pencak Silat can help build self-confidence, teach discipline and provide a sense of belonging even within diverse communities and can help include and support those living with a disability."
About Pencak Silat | Pencak Silat Australia
Pencak Silat Australia aims to further the awareness, understanding and competitiveness of the traditional Indonesian Martial Art Pencak Silat. Pencak Silat is a traditional Martial Art found in South-East Asia and has over 800 known styles in Indonesia alone. Although relatively unknown, even in Martial Arts circles, Indonesian styles of Pencak Silat were historically disguised as a dance during the Dutch occupation, with the most effective techniques hidden in the art form.
Previously called the 'Dutch East Indies', Pencak Silat (that had been hidden for centuries) helped Indonesia gain their independence at the end of World War II. Pencak Silat then officially became a sport. Pencak Silat holds a World Championship every two years in a different location each year throughout South-East Asia.
