Elite Climbers to Scale Walls at Warwick University Weekend Event

The National Universities Lead and Speed Climbing Championships (NULSCC) event on Saturday 17th February is set to showcase some of the best UK climbing talent.

2023 NULSCC EventOver 100 athletes from universities across the country will be taking part using the state-of-the-art climbing facilities at Warwick Sport and Wellness Hub, with the final rounds free to watch for public spectators.

NULSCC is organised by University of Warwick alumni Elliot Payne and Laure Renault as well as current student Jamie Parkin and will be supported by volunteers from Warwick University Climbing Club.

The final rounds are open to the public from 16:45 on Saturday 17th February. Attendees can expect a day filled with competition and community spirit, spectating is free with donations welcome to the event's partner charity, Climbers Against Cancer.

Helan Alexander from Climbers Against Cancer said: "All the donations that people give to us go into one pot, which then allows us to make sizeable grants to cancer research centres around the world. Working with events such as NULSCC is not only about the immediate result of the monies raised but also about keeping the Climbers Against Cancer name in people's awareness. The younger generation, such as university students, are our next vital team of volunteers, ambassadors, and sponsors themselves. Collaborations such as this are extremely important for the continuation of CAC."

Last year's event featured a strong and international field of elite level athletes, as well as up-and-coming athletes. Notable athletes included Warwick student Joshua Bruyns (who has qualified to represent South Africa at the 2024 Paris Olympics), Matthew Fall (Team GB), Pippa Watkin (ex GB development team) and Galo Hernandez (competed in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and current Warwick Sport Climbing Coach).

NULSCC Founder and Warwick alumni Elliot Payne said: "It is so rewarding to deliver an event that simultaneously attracts the most talented athletes in the UK and a huge spread of up-and-coming athletes. I am grateful to all our athletes, sponsors, contributors, volunteers and my fellow organisers. I truly believe that what we have achieved as a community is something that we can all celebrate, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds."
