The popular Elizabeth Rise Community Centre in Elizabeth Downs has reached a major milestone, celebrating ten years of providing a space for residents to connect, socialise, and access valuable life skills.
Affectionately known as 'The Rise' the space has become a second home to many community members over the last decade, 50 of whom came together on Wednesday 02 October to reminisce, share stories and celebrate.
The Rise officially opened its doors on September 19, 2014 and quickly became a vital meeting place for the community, with craft sessions, community connection programs and leisure activities held weekly.
Elizabeth Downs resident, Josephine Worden, has been a regular visitor at The Rise since 2017, with the centre providing opportunities for social interaction and connection.
"There is always plenty to keep me busy at the centre and I am involved in the exercise group," Ms Worden said.
Ms Worden has lived in the area since 1975 and is grateful Council is committed to providing a safe space for residents to meet new friends.
"If someone is unable to drive, it is very close for many people to just walk through the doors, it is a welcoming place with great people," she said.
City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty joined residents in their celebration of The Rise, recognising the community's role in creating such a welcoming and supportive space.
"Our community really is the secret ingredient in the success of The Rise," the Mayor said.
"While Council provides the space and programs, it is the people that continue to welcome others and create a welcoming, inclusive and friendly environment. We should be proud that such an important place in this community has operated for 10 years."
