Embodied Carbon in Built Environment Talk April 10

Pennsylvania State University

Rahman Azari, associate professor of architecture in the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture's Stuckeman School, will discuss his book, "The Routledge Handbook of Embodied Carbon in the Built Environment," with B. Stephen Carpenter II, Michael J. and Aimee Rusinko Kakos Dean in the College of Arts and Architecture, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at the Woskob Family Gallery, located at 146 S. Allen St., State College.

The handbook, co-edited with Alice Moncaster and published by Routledge in 2023, explores the topic of embodied carbon, which refers to the emissions produced throughout the lifecycle of building, from procuring materials and building to maintaining and eventually disposing of built areas. The handbook provides advanced insights that focus on measuring and reducing embodied carbon from across the built environment, including buildings, urban areas and cities, and construction materials and components.

At Penn State, Azari is the founding director of the Resource and Energy Efficiency Lab in the Department of Architecture. He is also a co-funded faculty member at Penn State's Institutes of Energy and the Environment. His research focuses on life cycle environmental impacts of built environments, innovative construction materials for energy production and carbon sequestration, and building energy and carbon efficiency. Azari was a recipient of the American Institute of Architects Upjohn Research Grant in 2019 and 2020.
