Byron Shire Council is starting works today (13 May) on an emergency access ramp from the Main Beach Car Park to Belongil Beach, Byron Bay.
Works are due to take four days and will include improvements to the gravel track from the car park and construction of a concrete ramp to the beach.
The new ramp will improve access for emergency vehicles and improve safety for users of Belongil Beach.
"Coastal erosion and wave events within the Bay have meant that the existing access point on the western side of the coastal protection works at Jonson Street, has been damaged and is unusable," Councils Manager Open Spaces & Facilities, Malcolm Robertson said.
"This has led to the Byron Surf Life Savers and emergency services being unable to reach the beach with vehicles during emergencies," Mr Robertson said.
Soil Conservation Service have been engaged to do these works.
"Soil Conservation Service were the contractor who worked on the Main and Clarkes Beach Dune Recovery Project and are extremely experienced in beach works and coastal management," Mr Robertson said.
During the works there will be some minor traffic disruption and traffic control will be in place in the car park.
This project has been funded by $80,000 from the Crown Pay Parking fund.
