We're hosting a series of events for seniors, in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Saturday 15 June.
The educational events aim to empower older residents and raise awareness about elder abuse prevention.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides an opportunity for communities globally to unite in opposition to elder abuse in all its forms – financial, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual or social.
Nillumbik Mayor Ben Ramcharan said it is important to equip our senior residents with knowledge that protects against abuse and mistreatment.
"By raising awareness through these events, we hope to empower seniors with knowledge about their rights, the risks of abuse, and the support services available," Cr Ramcharan said.
"We aim to foster a community of respect where our elders feel safe, supported and empowered to stand up against abuse."
The events include:
- 'Protecting Your Rights' elder abuse information session (Monday 17 June) – an overview of elder abuse, risks, prevention and support available through SRV and other agencies
- Chinese 'Protecting Your Rights' session (Tuesday 18 June) – tailored for the local Chinese community and held in Mandarin
- 'Money, Ageing and Family' seminar (Wednesday 19 June) – exploring family financial matters like lending money, co-habitation, and Powers of Attorney
