The Tasmanian Government has welcomed today's decision by the Federal Labor Government to abandon plans for its unfair Biosecurity Tax.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, said the Tasmanian Government has long advocated for farmers who are opposed to this tax.
"We made it clear during the election campaign that the Tasmanian Government would fight side by side with farmers because there would be little benefit for Tasmanian producers," Minister Howlett said.
"I have repeatedly lobbied the Federal Labor Government to abandon this tax, which would do nothing more than subsidise issues for mainland Australia.
"Australian farmers already contribute $150 million in levies to pay the Federal Government for research and development, biosecurity screening and global market access.
"We know the value of keeping our island state free of pests and diseases and we have delivered nearly $13 million for the State's biosecurity to manage the risk to our growers and producers.
"Under the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future we have fought alongside our peak representative bodies against this deeply flawed tax.
"We thank TasFarmers for their fierce advocacy in this space and welcome the result."
