The City of Launceston has undertaken a review of speed limits across Launceston to ensure alignment with the Launceston Transport Strategy goals of a liveable, healthy and connected City.
The review has focused on areas of the City where there are high levels of interaction between vehicles and with pedestrians, and crash records indicate a disproportionate number of incidents in these areas. Pedestrians are vulnerable road users and the speed of vehicles is a critical component in creating a safe environment.
The review has identified a number of roads (listed below) that warrant a speed limit reduction to better align with the use of that road. For each road the crash history and typical travel speeds have been considered to inform the review.

The proposed reductions from 60kmh to 50kmh are:
- Bathurst Street
- Wellington Street between Cameron & Frankland Streets
- High Street between David & Arthur streets, East Launceston
- Invermay Road between Forster Street & Vermont Road, Invermay
- Elphin Road, Penquite Road and Hoblers Bridge Road in the vicinity of the Newstead Shopping Centre
The proposed reductions from 50kmh to 40kmh are:
- Launceston CBD area bounded by Cimitiere, York, Wellington, & Tamar Streets
- Mowbray shopping centre, Invermay Road between Vermont Road and Haig Street
- Kings Meadows shopping centre, Hobart Road between Riseley Street and Opossum Road.
