Inner West Mayor, Darcy Byrne, will today unveil the first of 30 bronze plaques to be installed on Enmore Road to celebrate some of the significant performers, musicians, comedians and dancers who have performed at the Enmore Theatre over the years.
Inner West Mayor, Darcy Byrne, will today unveil the first of 30 bronze plaques to be installed on Enmore Road to celebrate some of the significant performers, musicians, comedians and dancers who have performed at the Enmore Theatre over the years.
The first of these will celebrate Bangarra Dance Theatre, the famous Aboriginal dance company who premiered at the Enmore in 1994 and launched their National tour of Mathinna there in 2008.
The Enmore walk of fame is being established by Inner West Council to uphold the incredible legacy of the Enmore Theatre and to celebrate the vast array of Australian and International stars who have performed there.
The Inner West Council will be opening a "people's choice" voting process on a broad range of iconic performers who have been associated with the famous venue and the public will be able to vote on which performers are chosen for the 30 plaques.
Accompanying Mayor Byrne will be Deputy Mayor, Chloe Smith, Greg Khoury from Century Venues, Bangarra's Artistic Director and Co-CEO Frances Rings and Director of Technical and Production, John Colvin.
The Enmore Walk of Fame is part of the Inner West's $7.5 million Main Streets Revitalisation Fund. The program is designed to enhance the vibrancy of Inner West main streets with improvements including improved infrastructure, public art and street furniture.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said, "The Enmore Theatre is one of the nation's most famous cultural institutions and the Enmore Walk of Fame will attract thousands more people to enjoy this unique venue and precinct.
"The world's best musicians, comedians and dancers have performed at the Enmore for the last 116 years and we want to make sure this continues for future generations.
"With the unveiling of this plaque we honour Bangarra Dance Theatre, one of Australia's most important and iconic arts companies.
"Now we want the people who've experienced the joy and magic of performances at the Enmore to be the ones to decide on the other artists who'll be memorialised in bronze on the Enmore Walk of Fame.
"Enmore Road is booming right now and we want to celebrate some of the stunning performers and performances that the Enmore Theatre has hosted over the decades."
Executive Director of Century Venues, Greg Khoury said, "Theatres are catalysts for urban renewal. We at Century are delighted that the Enmore Theatre's 126-year contribution to the Inner West has been recognised and celebrated in this very special initiative."
