Ensuring Debit Cards In Mobile Wallets

The Australian Banking Association (ABA) is informing customers about an important update that may affect some debit cards used in mobile wallets. Australian Payments Plus (AP+) is implementing a technical update to ensure that consumers can continue to make payments via eftpos from 1 January 2025.

A small number of consumers who added their debit card to their mobile wallet before July 2023, have enabled the option to send transactions via eftpos, or use an eftpos-only debit card, will need to remove and re-add their debit card to their mobile wallet. No action is required for those using a physical debit card.

Banks will be contacting impacted customers directly to provide guidance on this update. Consumers should be aware that no contact will be made to them directly from eftpos or AP+.

ABA CEO Anna Bligh said shoppers should be on the lookout for contact from their bank so there are no interruptions to their mobile wallet.

"This update will only impact a small number of customers and banks will be reaching out to those customers who need to take action.

"It's a straightforward and quick fix, with customers simply needing to remove and re-add their card to their mobile wallet.

Please take steps to apply the update simply by removing and re-adding your card, minimising any interruptions to planned activities during the festive season." Ms Bligh said.

The update applies specifically to consumers who:

  • added the debit card to their mobile wallet before July 2023, and
  • have turned on the option to send transactions via eftpos, or
  • use an eftpos-only debit card.
