Environment And Climate Change Grants Awarded

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024/25 Environment and Climate Change Grants, with funding supporting local projects that deliver positive environmental outcomes for the Darwin community.

The annual grant program sees $50,000 allocated for a variety of innovative and sustainable local projects.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was thrilled with the quality of projects that will be supported through the grants program, which range from mattress recycling, to community education on biodiversity, and the seasonal growing of produce.

"We have a number of strategies in place that will help us achieve a cool, clean and green city, and each of these grant recipients align to these strategies," Mr Vatskalis said.

"These grants will help community groups and local businesses implement environmentally sustainable initiatives, which will ultimately benefit the greater Darwin municipality."

The projects supported through the grants program include:

  • HPA Incorporated will implement a mattress reuse and recycling initiative, including cleaning second hand mattresses for resale.
  • Lakeside Drive Community Garden will run 'Growing with the Seasons' community workshops, based on Gulumoerrgin seasonal produce calendar for planting, growing and cooking in Darwin, as well as sessions focused on biodiversity, art and culture. This year is the garden's 15th anniversary and the grant project will assist with the celebrations.
  • Territory Native Plants will run an NT Native Eco Fair at Jingili Watergardens, including informational stalls, walks and talks focused on biodiversity and greening as well as native plant sales.
  • Waste Energy Benefits will implement a reusable foodware, seating and commercial dishwashing setup at Parap Market to reduce single‐use packaging waste.

"These initiatives benefit everyone who lives, works or visits Darwin, and will deliver positive environmental outcomes for our community," he said.

Applications for the grants were assessed on how they contribute to achieving actions within the City of Darwin 2030 Climate Emergency Strategy, Greening Darwin Strategy and/or Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy, as well as whether they are innovative and sustainable initiatives.
