Environmental Indicators Dashboard

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

An environmental indicator is a number or measure that shows how the environment is changing. These indicators help track trends and show the effects of environmental policies and programs over time.

The EIA Environmental Indicators Dashboard displays charts, statistics, and maps based on the best scientific information about ecosystems in Australia. It shows data including, ecosystem distribution, protection levels, changes in species, including endangered ones, over time.

The EIA Environmental Indicators use data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This data was used to create the first National Ecosystem Account, which has also just been released.

These Environmental Indicators are part of Australia's efforts to follow the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which has 23 targets to reach by 2030. They also support Australia's Strategy for Nature 2024-2030.

The Environmental Iindicators will be updated as data becomes available and further environmental indicators will be developed to support Australia's priorities including environmental trend analysis for State of the Environment and other environmental reporting.
