We have seen how vital intensive care units are during the pandemic and now, thanks to a significant investment, the ICU at Epworth Freemasons is able to deliver better care and comfort to patients and their loved ones.
Epworth Freemasons Executive General Manager, Simon Benedict, said that the $2.6 million upgrade, funded entirely by philanthropy, is being rolled out in two stages, the first of which is now open. 'It's wonderful to see our facilities and equipment upgraded during such a critical time in Victoria's healthcare history. The new refurbishment has come online almost 21 years since the first ICU opened here in October 2000,' he said.
'Our unit's refurbishment and equipment upgrades were made possible by the generosity of donors and are already benefiting our patients, staff and Doctors'
At the heart of these significant upgrades we have:
- converted our existing double rooms into single cubicles
- created a positive pressure room
- large ICU medication room and a new office area for the ICU liaison team
- nurse call system upgrades
- new office space for staff and doctors
- new bedhead service panels
- modern joinery, flooring, lighting and improved storage.
'In addition to this significant refurbishment of the ICU space, we have invested in a new Phillips patient monitoring system and telemetry, which also includes mobile monitors in each room.
'Our second and final stage of this significant project is due for completion by within weeks. This will see upgrades to five rooms on the adjoining medical ward to allow for significant surge capacity should it be required in ICU. We will also have a new ICU reception and a refurbished lounge area where families can have time away from the clinical area' Mr Benedict said.
