In a positive move for the community, Edward River Council (ERC) has announced a significant reduction in the fees and charges for standpipe water sales.
At its ordinary council meeting on Tuesday, 18 March, the Council resolved to amend the cost of standpipe water from $11 per kilolitre to $4 per kilolitre for the remainder of the financial year.
ERC's Mayor, Cr Ashley Hall, stated, "This fee reduction demonstrates our commitment to supporting rural communities and ensuring access to affordable and reliable water sources. Regional standpipes are crucial for communities remote from water schemes, providing a vital water source for domestic, commercial and agricultural needs".
Whilst Council supplies drinking water to the township via reticulated water mains, some rural properties lie outside this supply area and rely on alternative means of capturing and storing water.
The Council operates two permanent bulk water filling facilities, commonly referred to as standpipes, across the Local Government Area. These are located on Hay Road opposite Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre and at the Deniliquin Saleyards.
Many regions across Australia are experiencing reduced rainfall and hotter, drier conditions, making water carting and standpipes increasingly important for securing water supply.
ERC's Chief Executive Officer, Jack Bond said that the changes made good sense: "The reduction in the cost per kilolitre will help to bring us in line with the charges incurred in neighbouring councils and will make things a little easier for our rural residents."
