EU Commission Applauds Renewal, Reform of Spanish Judiciary

European Commission

The European Commission welcomes today's agreement on the renewal of the Spanish Council for the Judiciary and the reform of the Organic Law on the Judiciary. This is a major step that addresses a long-standing concern and improves the situation of the judiciary in Spain.

In January 2024, the Commission accepted to facilitate a structured dialogue on the implementation of the recommendation from the 2022 and 2023 Rule of law Reports related to the Spanish Council for the Judiciary. The recommendation reads as follows:

"Proceed with the renewal of the Council for the Judiciary as a matter of priority and initiate, immediately after the renewal, a process in view of adapting the appointment of its judges-members, taking into account European standards on Councils for the Judiciary."

Three meetings took place between Mr Felix Bolaños and Mr Esteban González Pons, together with Commissioner Reynders. Today both sides met Vice-President Jourová and signed an agreement on the renewal of the Spanish Council for the Judiciary and the reform of the Organic Law on the Judiciary, in her presence.
