  • The new Deputy Commissioner position was created by statute amendments

Attorney General John Quigley has announced the appointment of the Hon Michael Corboy SC as a Deputy Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC).

The new CCC Deputy Commissioner position was created by amendments to the Corruption, Crime and Misconduct Act 2003 (WA) earlier this year.

His career as a Judge, barrister and solicitor spans more than four decades.

He retired as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia in April 2023 after serving on the bench for 13 years.

The Hon Michael Corboy SC joined the judiciary in 2010 as a Commercial and Managed Cases list Judge, presiding in that area for about four years.

He subsequently presided over criminal matters including homicide and drug importation trials.

He was also a member of the Court of the Appeal and, in 2019, became the Judge in charge of the Supreme Court's criminal lists, a position he held until retiring from the court.

Prior to his time as a Judge, he practised for about 15 years as a barrister on the Independent Bar.

He appeared in complex commercial and corporate cases as well as trade practices, taxation, professional indemnity, and public and regulatory law matters.

The Hon Michael Corboy SC worked on some high-profile cases including acting for the liquidator of the Bell Group companies in the long-running Bell litigation.

He often acted for the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Taxation at all levels from the Administrative Appeals Tribunal to the High Court, including on fraudulent tax schemes.

His barrister days between 1996 and 2010 included terms as chairperson, vice-chairperson and a board member of Francis Burt Chambers.

He was also previously a partner at two legal firms and, in 2002, appointed a Senior Counsel.

The Hon Michael Corboy SC commences his five-year term as CCC Deputy Commissioner on 29 July 2024.

The CCC investigates allegations of serious misconduct in the State's public sector.

As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:

"I congratulate the Hon Michael Corboy SC on being appointed as Deputy Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission.

"He has served with distinction over a long career in the legal profession including in leadership roles.

"His expert management of lengthy trials as a Supreme Court Judge highlighted his proficiency in dealing with complex and demanding cases.

"That expertise was also demonstrated during the period he worked as a solicitor and barrister on a number of proceedings involving complex legal issues.

"While at the Bar, as well as his involvement in commercial and other disputes, he conducted arbitrations, mediations and determinations and acted as a court appointed mediator.

"The Hon Michael Corboy SC brings an extensive background in criminal and commercial law matters that will enhance the CCC's investigative capabilities."
