A major exercise to test Australia's response to a potential outbreak of H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) has seen experts across the nation join forces in a series of exercises.
Led by the Australian Government, Exercise Volare involved a simulated detection of H5N1 HPAI in Australian wildlife. The exercise included state and territory governments, industry and non-government groups to strengthen Australia's H5N1 HPAI preparedness and response capabilities.
Australia remains the only continent free from H5N1 HPAI, which has impacted poultry, wild birds and mammals overseas.
Activities such as Exercise Volare test Australia's biosecurity system and help us prepare for possible emergency animal disease outbreaks.
