From Monday 12 August 2024, Council will commence work on a major upgrade and expansion project at Cooma Cemetery, adding another 10 years to the operational timeline at one of the Snowy Monaro's most important burial and interment facilities.

Located adjacent to Monaro High School on Mittagang Road, Cooma Cemetery has served as Cooma's main cemetery for approximately 150 years.

Building on significant upgrades and additions completed by Council in 2022, this project will provide Cooma Cemetery with the space and infrastructure needed to continue operating for at least another 15 years.

The upgrade and expansion project starting this month will be carried out in two stages:

Stage 1:

  • Preparation of an unused area for additional parking
  • Extension of the cemetery grounds
  • Installation of irrigation infrastructure
  • Trenching and laying of new concrete beams

Stage 2:

  • Completion of irrigation system
  • Tree planting
  • Grass seeding
  • Road improvements

Public access to cemetery grounds near the project site will be restricted while work on this expansion project is underway.

These restrictions will impact the area of cemetery land adjacent to Monaro High School that is regularly used for parking by the school community. Drivers who park in this area will need to find other parking locations for the duration of these works.

These upgrades are part of Council's ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing cemetery services across the Snowy Monaro region.

Cooma Cemetery holds significant historical importance as the final resting place for many of the Monaro's early European settlers. Council will ensure this new work will be undertaken with the care and respect that a site of this significance requires.
