Experts commend China on anti-domestic violence law, ask about women's rights

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women today concluded its consideration of the ninth periodic reports of China, of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, and of the Macau Special Administrative Region of China. Committee Experts commended China on its anti-domestic violence laws, and asked questions about women's political participation and sex-selective abortions.

A Committee Expert commended China for achievements in laws and policies related to gender equality, specifically in the sphere of protection from violence against women. These included the law on the protection of women's rights and interests and the anti-domestic violence law, and their latest amendments. However, the Committee noted that problematic areas in the area of gender-based violence still remained.
