Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of disability and death in Australia. Common causes are falls, car accidents and assault. These injuries can lead to complex, long-term problems affecting patients' personalities, relationships and independence.
The MRFF's Traumatic Brain Injury Mission is providing $50 million over 10 years to improve the lives of patients with traumatic brain injury.
The Australian Government has appointed the Traumatic Brain Injury Mission Expert Advisory Panel to advise on the mission's priorities.
Professor Melinda Fitzgerald, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of research, Curtin University, and Emeritus Professor Robert Vink, will lead the panel in its review of the mission's Roadmap and Implementation Plan.
This review will make sure these documents take into account emerging evidence, and are consistent with the government's responses to the:
- Senate Inquiry into concussions and repeated head trauma in contact sport
- Inquiry into family, domestic and sexual violence.
It will also consider:
- recent policy frameworks such as the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032
- relevant action plans such as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan 2023-2025.
