Taking our community's passion for turning trash into treasure up a notch, the new Upcycle Centre at Moss Vale Resource Recovery Centre will bring an even more rewarding experience of recycling to Wingecarribee. After 11 years of outsourcing recycling services to Reviva, plans are underway to transition to Council-run operations and change-up the facility to make the most of the true value of re-purposed waste for our community, natural environment and local economy.
Welcome to UC, where the future of recycling in our Shire starts with a fresh new brand. A refurbished retail space, with better ways of repairing, upcycling and re-using waste are on the way. "In the coming months, recycling-minded community members can look forward to re- imagined retail spaces to explore at UC," says the Manager Waste and Resource Management, Clinton McAlister. Bag a bargain from the upper-mezzanine travel spot, browse for books in our library nook, and shop new-look zones of homewares, kitchenware, electronics, entertainment, sporting goods, hardware, gardening, collectibles, toys and of course clothing and manchester. "We hope to soon add an on-site Repair Café to build community and bring new life to items that might otherwise end up in landfill." Mr McAlister says.
A Test and Tag service is also in the planning, where an accredited technician will test electronic appliances for safety and working condition.
A bonus of the transition to UC is knowing that the dollars you spend on upcycled items will now be reinvested right back into even more great sustainability initiatives, keeping the revenue within our community. The true value of recycling to the community is significant. UC will continue to divert around 350 tonnes of waste from landfill each year which translates to cost savings of around $300 per tonne on disposal processes.
Sustainability starts with us. A new UC education centre and full program of Waste Wonder Workshops are under development to cultivate true champions of waste by sharing knowledge that enhances understanding of waste as a commodity of great value to our community. "We're talking fun and informative sessions to encourage eco-conscious living, like Pink Welding to broaden local skills for repurposing waste materials, hands-on Re- upholstery, Fashion Upcycling, Knife Making, Lead Lighting, Bees Wax Wraps, Quilting, Native Propagation and Seed Starting, Worm Farming and more," Mr McAlister explains.
Centre Upgrades will also improve access to UC, making it easier than ever to drop-in or drop-off waste for recycling and do your bit for the environment as we work together toward zero waste!
"We are grateful for the wonderful work Reviva has done to cultivate community members' enthusiasm for recycling. We look forward to continuing their successful efforts as we move forward with enhancing our recycling initiatives for the benefit of our growing community," Mr McAlister says. Partnerships with local charities will continue and grow as we all pull together to build a lasting legacy of sustainability.
