More than 2000 competitors from across Australia, Oceania and South East Asia, the UK and USA competed in 21 sports across four days of competition in Cairns as part of the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games in May.
The figures were contained in a report to Council in today's Ordinary Meeting which showed about 2100 people participated in Games, held from 23-26 May.
It was the third time Cairns hosted the biennial event, which incorporates sporting and social activities.
Council has confirmed its interest in again hosting the event and is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) for the delivery of the Great Barrier Reef Master Games in 2021, and possibly beyond.
A report released at today's Ordinary Meeting noted: "The EOI process would provide Council with options to compare the level of industry interest, risks and other implications for different opportunities that may be presented."
