Lake Macquarie City Council has launched more than $100,000 worth of funded opportunities for creatives to contribute to major places and projects across the city this year.

Expressions of interest (EOI) open this month for creative opportunities to contribute to Living Smart Festival 2022, and to create work to be installed at two new, innovative Council facilities currently under construction – Sugar Valley Library Museum, Kirantakamyari, and Windale Hub, Bilyabayi.

Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said the pool of funding was one of the largest offered by Council for creative projects, enabling artists, organisations and makers to shape significant precinct developments, festivals and events.

"If you want to make your creative mark in Lake Mac, now is the time," Ms Hemsley said.

"With opportunities across the creative spectrum – from developing innovative and sustainable commissioned works for festivals, to designing major public sculptures for our new facilities – this EOI represents a meaningful investment from Council in supporting artists to shape the future of our city."

Information and application processes for all current expression of interest opportunities can be found at arts.lakemac.com.au/get-involved/creative-opportunities.

For creatives interested in learning more about these opportunities, two online information sessions will be hosted via Microsoft Teams on:

Expressions of interest are open across the following projects.

Council is seeking design proposals for temporary art installations to be included as part of Living Smart Festival, 23-25 September 2022.

Council is offering two commission opportunities of $4000 (plus GST) each for artists working with found objects and recycled materials; one to create a large-scale site-specific interactive art installation made from found objects and recycled materials that will engage audiences, and a second to create a large site-specific 'Wandakalua Awabakala Barayidin – Welcome to Awabakal Country' art installation.

With an extended closing date of Friday 22 July 2022, this is your opportunity to bring your creativity to our celebration of sustainable living in 2022.

Council is seeking proposals for a significant series of creative treatments to be included as part of the construction of the Windale Hub, Bilyabayi. The project seeks to acknowledge, strengthen and celebrate the Windale community's relationship with the site as their civic lounge room; a place to gather, learn, connect and celebrate. The commissions, while artist-led, should be community-focused and engage community members in the making of the work.

Council is offering three commissions for the design, fabrication and installation of a creative treatment:

  • suspended sculpture for main open public space – $50,000 (plus GST)
  • outdoor artwork – $20,000 (plus GST)
  • children's area creative treatment – $4000 (plus GST).

Expressions of interest for creative inclusions at Windale Hub, Bilyabayi close on Thursday 18 August 2022.

Council is seeking design proposals for a permanent outdoor sculpture out the front of the Sugar Valley Library Museum, Kirantakamyari at Cameron Park.

Council is offering one commission with a total budget of $25,000 (plus GST) to combine existing heritage metal objects that have been reclassified to be made available for a creative sculptural form. Perfect for blacksmiths, metalworkers and artists who have a passion for industrial and rural heritage, this commission will become a key feature of the innovative new Sugar Valley Library Museum, Kirantakamyari cultural facility.

Expressions of interest for this opportunity close on Thursday 25 August 2022.
