Libraries Tasmania is proposing to extend hours at a number of libraries around Tasmania and is seeking feedback for proposed variations to opening hours at some locations.
The proposed changes include trialling Saturday opening at Kinimathatakinta/George Town Library, Smithton Library and New Norfolk Library.
Sunday opening is proposed at Launceston Library and Hobart Library.
Penguin, Smithton, Sorell, Ulverstone and Wynard libraries are proposed to have extended hours.
There will be no reduction to any library opening hours.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said libraries are the lifeblood of our communities.
"The proposed changes are aimed at better suiting community needs, and we're inviting local communities to have their say about what works best for them," Minister Palmer said.
"We know how important libraries are to regional communities – we will not be cutting hours at any library across the State."
Targeted community consultation will be undertaken with communities where there are proposed changes to existing opening and closing times.
The community has a chance to provide feedback on the proposed opening hours of the following libraries to ensure their library is open at times that work best for most people:
Full details about the proposed opening hours and the feedback form can be found at https://libraries.tas.gov.au/proposed-changes-to-library-opening-hours
Community members can also visit their local library to provide feedback.
Feedback is open until Friday 20 September 2024.
An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is about developing stronger communities and enhancing our regions.
