A man has had his charge upgraded following the death of a man from an alleged assaulted in the Illawarra last month.
About 10.50pm on Friday (12 April 2024), emergency services responded to reports of an assault at a hotel on Central Road, Unanderra, about 6km south-west of Wollongong.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 59-year-old man at the scene. He was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a critical condition.
A crime scene was established, with officers from Lake Illawarra Police District commencing an investigation into the incident with Strike Force Tora established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following inquiries, about 4.30pm (Tuesday 16 April 2024), a 33-year-old man was arrested after attending Lake Illawarra Police Station.
He was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent and affray.
About 11am (Wednesday 1 May 2024), police were notified the man had died in hospital.
As a result, detectives attached to Lake Illawarra Police District attended a correctional centre in Nowra about 9.45am today.
The man has been charged with the additional offence of assault cause death.
He was remanded in custody to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday 12 June 2024.
