F20 Forum Amplifies G20 Debates From Rio's Favelas

The F20 launch event, scheduled for July 8, will feature leaders from several Rio favelas. Its goal is to incorporate the perspectives and demands of this significant population segment into the forum's discussions under the G20 Social umbrella.

As the G20 Summit approaches, leaders from the favelas are launching the F20 forum and mobilizing to secure their participation in discussions concerning critical issues affecting nearly 10% of Brasil's population - favela residents.

The Favelas 20 (F20) initiative is integral to the G20 Social framework. It aims to enhance social participation and ensure that the movements within favelas influence the group's decision-making processes. F20's recommendations will be presented to relevant Brazilian authorities and shared at the G20 Social Summit, scheduled for November 14-16 in Rio de Janeiro.

The summit will provide communities and peripheral areas with a platform to voice their needs. This initiative aligns with Brasil's objective of establishing social participation as a lasting legacy of its G20 presidency. By incorporating the perspectives of favela residents - who are frequently marginalized and excluded from decision-making and policy discourse - these discussions aim to offer a more comprehensive and authentic representation of the diverse societal challenges.

Many policies discussed at the G20 directly affect living conditions in the favelas, encompassing economic development, access to essential services, human rights, and environmental sustainability. Integrating favela perspectives in these discussions underscores pressing issues and specific needs that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Launch of Favelas 20

Confirmed attendees for the F20 launch event include leaders from Rio favelas such as Vila Kennedy, Manguinhos, Rocinha, Vidigal, Complexo do Alemão, Maré, Acari, Caju, Fumacê, and Jacarezinho. The initiative aims to amplify the voices of favela residents advocating for social justice, addressing challenges including poverty, violence, environmental impact, and infrastructure deficiencies. These efforts emphasize adaptation, mitigation, and resilience, reflecting the shared struggles of favela communities in Brasil and worldwide.

"The objective of F20 is to involve favela residents in decision-making processes. We aim to significantly enhance their participation in local, regional, and particularly global discussions by leveraging their firsthand experiences. Our goal is to ensure the inclusion of favela perspectives in global conversations,"stated Gabriela Santos, executive director of Voz das Comunidades.

Emerging from the favelas, F20 presents an opportunity to mobilize residents to engage in causes that can influence G20 discussions. It aims to enhance the visibility of favelas at local, regional, and global levels, advocating for marginalized and excluded communities in decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are addressed.

F20 is organized into five working groups (WGs) focused on specific areas:

1. Combating Inequalities, Poverty, Hunger, and Promoting Mental Health.
2. Access to Drinking Water, Basic Sanitation, and Personal Hygiene.
3. Addressing the Climate Crisis and Promoting a Just Energy Transition.
4. Disaster Risk Reduction.
5. Transformation, Digital, and Cultural Inclusion.

These working groups aim to tackle critical issues faced by favela communities and advocate for sustainable, inclusive solutions to enhance residents' quality of life.
