Police have now established that an earlier report of a sexual assault in Northern NSW did not occur, NSW Police say.
Officers from New England Local Area Command were told an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by two men near the Tingha Bridge, Inverell, about 6.50am on Sunday 20 March 2016.
Local detectives, with the assistance of the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad, established Strike Force Broaden to investigate the incident.
As a result of their investigation, police established the report was false.
The woman is currently being supported by her family, friends, and professional health services.
NSW Police Force continues to encourage victims of crime to report incidents to police immediately.
