Family First has pledged to repeal the dangerous Equality Legislation Amendment (LGBTIQA+) Bill if its candidates are elected to the NSW Parliament in 2027.
The bill put forward by Alex Greenwich, which passed the lower house of the NSW Parliament today, threatens the safety and rights of women, girls, and children by removing key safeguards in the name of so-called equality.
Lyle Shelton, National Director of Family First, expressed deep concern about the implications of the bill, particularly its allowance biological men to identify as women by changing their sex on their birth certificates at a whim.
"This exposes girls and women to in-tact biological males in female only spaces like change rooms, toilets and prisons.
"Women have been raped and assaulted by men identifying as women, with one NSW magistrate ludicrously referring to 'her penis' in the case of one Western Sydney offender.
"Greenwich's bill also trashes fairness in girls and women's sports by allowing the fiction that a male can be a female and have female rights.
"This legislation effectively erases female-only spaces and undermines sex-based rights," Shelton said.
Shelton also criticised the bill's impact on children, particularly those experiencing gender dysphoria.
"Allowing children and young people to legally change their sex encourages them down the path of harmful and irreversible medical transitioning, a practice which has been abolished following the Cass Review in the UK.
"Greenwich and NSW Premier Chris Minns, who supported the bill, are out of step with emerging international research, which shows that many children, particularly girls, often outgrow their gender dysphoria."
In addition, Shelton raised concerns about the bill's weakening of protections for prostituted women.
"This bill allows men to live off the proceeds of the women they prostitute – it is deeply misogynist.
"The legalisation of overseas surrogacy arrangements creates a rental market in the wombs of exploited women and allows the trafficking of their babies.
"How parliamentarians could vote for this is beyond belief."
Family First is committed to fighting this bill and will push for its repeal if elected in 2027.
"We cannot allow this harmful legislation to stand. Family First will fight to restore common sense protections for women, girls, and children," Shelton said.
