The Family First Party has announced that if elected to the cross bench it will immediately pursue new legislation designed to prevent hostile public takeovers of faith-based organisations, following recent national concerns over such actions – particularly the Labor Green Government takeover of Calvary Hospital.
The draft law will aim to protect the autonomy and values of religious institutions that serve communities through education, healthcare, and charity.
The acquisition of Calvary raised alarm among religious and civil society groups, who fear that similar actions could undermine the missions of faith-based organisations, forcing them to compromise on their core beliefs and values.
The Family First Party argues that these entities should be safeguarded from corporate or government interference that could lead to drastic shifts in their operations.
"Faith-based organisations, and frankly private property rights, are critical pillars of our communities, providing essential services rooted in deeply held beliefs. The Calvary Hospital case highlights the need for urgent legal protections to ensure these institutions can operate freely, without external pressure or hostile takeovers," said Family First MLA Elizabeth Kikkert.
The proposed law would require stricter scrutiny of any attempts to acquire or alter the leadership of religious organisations, ensuring that their missions remain intact.
This legislation is expected to be tabled in Parliament later this year, with hopes for cross-party support to defend religious freedom.
