Family Violence Rehousing Boosts Safety for Women, Kids

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is strengthening protection for women and children fleeing family violence with the expansion of the Family Violence Rapid Rehousing program.

As part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, an Expression of Interest to add up to 100 more Family Violence Rapid Rehousing properties to the program is now open, inviting property owners who can supply homes close to major urban centres, transport services and amenities to participate.

Minister for Housing and Planning, Felix Ellis, said providing more support for women and children put in these unimaginable situations is a priority for this government.

"Providing safe and secure homes through our Family Violence Rapid Rehousing program is an important part of ensuring we're keeping women and children safe," Minister Ellis said.

"We're calling on property owners to be part of the solution by supporting victims of family violence.

"This Rapid Rehousing program provides housing assistance for people escaping family violence through transitional accommodation with leases up to 12 months at subsidised rent, until they are able to transition to independent living."

Minister for Women and Prevention of Family Violence, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the Tasmanian Government is serious about achieving its vision of a Tasmania where all are safe, equal, and respected.

"Innovative programs, such as this, bring increased capacity to our ability to help," Minister Ogilvie said.

"Expanding our response to the demand for family violence assistance requires that we work together across all areas of prevention of family violence - from housing, to health, to safety, and importantly on cultural change.

"Our government is deeply committed to doing all we can to ensure that all Tasmanians are free from family violence. We recognise the need to do more and welcome community engagement.

"We are taking action right now, continuing the implementation of our $100 million Family and Sexual Violence Action Plan: Survivors at the Centre 2022-2027."

As part of the program, participating property owners receive guaranteed rent for the lease period, and tenancy and property management provided fee-free by Centacare Evolve Housing, a registered and experienced statewide property manager.
