Farmers Welcome Funding For Avian Influenza

The state's peak farming body has welcomed the announcement of $6.9 million in Federal Government funding to support surveillance and preparedness for Avian Influenza in Australia.

NSW Farmers believes funding is critical to support early detection, response capabilities and understanding of risk pathways within Australia for Avian Influenza.

However, it is important funding is directed to where it is needed most.

There is still a need to support industry and state governments as they monitor the risks and manage the responses to current outbreaks of Avian Influenza, and we shouldn't wait until an outbreak has occurred to act.

Governments need to work proactively with industry to enhance protections against all strains of this disease.

Industry and state governments need to have the appropriate resources to not only prepare for Avian Influenza, but also to support early detection, response and recovery.

This battle isn't one to be fought alone, and proper resources and collaboration will be the key to ensuring we can successfully protect Australia from the threat of this disease.
