An investigation on behalf of the State Coroner is underway after a man was fatally shot by police at South Brisbane this afternoon (October 11).
Preliminary information suggests officers driving a marked police van along Edmonstone Street at around 3pm spotted a man matching the description and clothing of a male involved in an earlier disturbance at a business in Fish Lane, South Brisbane.
It will be alleged the man attempted to open the rear doors of the police van, which had stopped, and rushed at an officer while armed with a metal rod.
A taser was deployed however it was ineffective and police fired their weapons.
Immediate first aid and CPR was provided however the man died at the scene.
A crime scene has been established in Edmonstone Street and investigations are continuing.
Formal identification is underway with the man believed to be aged in his 30s.
The incident is under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner, and is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
